FREDA ROSSIDIS

Artistic Director and owner of CAST Salons
Few hairdressers live on the nexus of fashion and hair as closely as Freda Rossidis, Artistic Director and Owner of CAST Salons in Melbourne. Freda visits New York three times per year, getting into the thick of the fashion world, including annual work with the Rodney Cutler team at New York Fashion Week. Having worked on fashion shows for top labels such as DKNY, Tony Birch, J Mendel, Carlos Miele and Rachel Zoe, Freda has earnt an international reputation as a key industry influencer. Highly respected by her peers, Freda is known for both mastery of hairdressing and being business savvy. Who’s Your? gets the inside scoop on Freda’s favourite hair products, career highlights and her number one barista in town…

Home is?
Melbourne, Victoria.

What do you do?
I am the Artistic Director and owner of CAST Salons

Most treasured item?
My next ticket to New York.

What are you listening to?
The Killers, Future Starts Slow.
The Smiths, There is a Light that Never Goes Out.
Marvin Gaye, Let’s Get It On.

What are you googling?
Alexander McQueen. I loved his fashion and extravagance, so I am always curious to see how the brand is progressing now that he is sadly no longer with us.

Who makes you laugh/smile?
A buzzing salon filled with laughs, superb cuts and colours, and a Burlesque show by Finucane & Smith, Tim Minchin.

What are your favourite hair products and why?
Kerastase, as the results I see with clients that use it daily are amazing! I also love Evo because of their lower price point yet high quality product range. It’s great for younger clients.

CAST has been awarded the HBIA Salon of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2010. How do you and your team manage to stay ahead of your competitors?
The CAST team is trained to be excellent. We have no star hairdressers and communication with clients is key. Everyone on our team understands how to achieve the highest quality hairdressing: our cuts always last, colours suit different skin tones and fashion trends, while home maintenance and hair health are always prescribed and explained clearly.

Our clients know that by coming to us they have completely maximised their chances of getting the hairstyle they want and will always leave happy.

What has been your career highlight to date?
There have been many which have included creating editorial looks for high profile clientele such as Dannii Minogue and Tim Minchin (we gave him his new straight hair look originally), representing Australia in the International Visionary Award in the UK in 2012, and of course, session styling for Fashion Weeks.

Favourite city in the world and why?
Other than my home city of Melbourne, New York… I didn’t have to think about that for a nano-second. I go three times each year: Christmas, Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer for New York Fashion Weeks.

Please tell us your top 5 must-have’s.

1.OSea vitamin boost face spritz – A perfect refresher in Summer and when travelling.

2.My Balmain scarf – It’s shawl size and great to use as a wrap when curled up on the plane.

3. My leather jacket … I can’t live without it.

4. My computer – Like everyone, I have to keep everything running, no matter where I am.

5. My diary – I start a new diary every work trip so I can write and draw about all the inspiring people, fashion and events along the way.

  • MELBOURNE IS KNOWN FOR ITS INCREDIBLE COFFEE, AND YOU KNOW MELBOURNE. SO TELL US, WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE BARISTA?
  • Andrew Yoannidis at Centro Espresso Caffe. Whenever I call into the city, I must visit this little gem. I discovered it during Spring Fashion Week when I was meeting with hair director Kevin Murphy and it’s now my go to place for a coffee fix when in the city.
