JULIET POTTER

Founder of Auto Chic
Juliet Potter is a breath of fresh air in the male-dominated auto industry. The mother of three started her site Auto Chic (autochic.com), Australia’s first car website exclusively for women, with an aim to feminise the field. A pioneer in the industry, she’s our go-to girl for all questions to do with car buying and maintenance.

Home is…
A cosy townhouse in Sydney’s Paddington where I live with my amazing partner Dan and gorgeous kids Ashley, 11, Lola, 6 and little baby Gia, 8 months.

What do you do?
Too much! I run women’s auto site  www.AutoChic.com.au and mums’ news and reviews site  www.MotherDriven.com.au

What’s your latest must-have?
A gorgeous silk scarf from Bay & Fyfe’s debut collection. Check them out here http://bayandfyfe.com

Five steps to avoid buying a dodgy car are…
Do your research. Check the fair price for the model you’re after on www.redbook.com.au and find out the car’s safety rating on www.ancap.com.au

Buying a car is much like playing poker – be careful how you act and never act too eager!

Always negotiate.

Get the car checked by the NRMA (NSW), RACV (VIC) or the equivalent in your state. These agencies will give you a condition report which you can then take back to the seller to negotiate the price.

Before you sign the pick up/delivery slip, inspect it closely in broad daylight to ensure everything is as before you signed the contract

What are some fuel-saving tips?
As obvious as it is, drive less! Try and be practical by planning to do a number of things in one trip. Also, only start your car when you’re ready to go – don’t idle! And keep your tyres in good shape – too low on air pressure and your engine will have to work harder, using more fuel.

What’s the best eco-friendly car on the market right now?
The small but mighty Volkswagen Polo TDI. Because of its 1.9L diesel engine, it uses an amazingly low 5 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.

  • YOU'RE AN EXPERT ON ALL THINGS AUTOMOTIVE. WHO'S YOUR MECHANIC?
  • I go to Kmart Tyre and Auto. They are cheap and always do a great job!
