Meet the lady behind the lens. Born in Ireland, Katie trained in food styling and graphic design before launching her blog, What Katie Ate. It has since tallied almost six million views, gaining an international following along the way. Our crazed foodie documents every meal for your viewing pleasure, from pulled pork sliders to chocolate truffle tarts, and surprise, surprise, her first cookbook ‘What Katie ate ~ Recipes and other bits and bobs‘ is now on sale!

Currently Balmain, Sydney with my husband Mick and our two black and white moggy cats; Gizmo and Rufus. My original home is Dublin, Ireland.

You’re an expert in…
Taking over the stereo during dinner parties after too many reds!

How long have you been blogging?
Two years. I changed careers three years ago, from graphic designer to photographer and set up ‘What Katie Ate’ as a platform to get my food photography out to a wider audience. In two years it’s garnered huge international attention and (thankfully) continues to grow.

What are your secret chow spots in the city?
El Loco in Surry Hills or Cantina Bar in Balmain, both great for Mexican. The latter is more quick and basic bar food but the atmosphere is great, and the cocktails are very tasty. I also adore Love.Fish in Rozelle – I eat there almost once a week.

How about the best place to get yummy organic food?
I don’t necessarily buy a huge amount of organic food but I am a staunch advocate for free-range and uncaged meat and eggs. When I do want organic foods I buy most of it from About Life in Rozelle Village.

When it comes to making dinner or throwing a party, what’s one mistake home cooks make?
I always regret it when I either cook items which are too complicated or I’ve never made before. Now when I throw dinner parties, I keep them simple, less formal and choose items that I can prepare 50-75% in advance.

Who’s your little helper in the kitchen?
I love Chefs’ Warehouse for all things cooking-related, Norton Street Grocer in Leichhardt for all my regular food shopping along with all the fab Italian shops in nearby Haberfield, and finally, Orange Grove Markets in Rozelle is great for fresh weekend veggies.
