After being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition in 2012, Peta Shulman decided to take charge of her health and be consistently mindful about the foods she was putting into her body. Discovering a newfound energy since making positive changes to her diet, Peta has never looked back and took the plunge from working full time in PR to launching GoodnessMe Box in 2014. Peta created GoodnessMe Box to get people excited about eating clean, nourishing their body with pure wholefoods and being a part of the wellness revolution!

What do you do?
I am the founder and owner of GoodnessMe Box, an online health food subscription box that provides the latest and greatest health food products each month the world is going nuts about!

Fastidious about?
I am fastidious about getting a good night’s sleep. I need a good night cap to renergise and when I wake up in the morning I automatically calculate how many hours sleep I have had, almost as if I am working out how energised or tired I feel!

Favourite hour of the day?
My favourite hour of the day is definitely the morning. I go to bed looking forward to breakfast, dreaming of eggs and avocado on toast or almond meal hotcakes! I also feel completely refreshed in the morning and am able to power through a number of tasks setting myself up for an organised stress-free day ahead. There is nothing better than an early morning walk to the beach or returning from an exercise class feeling energised and ready to take on the world!

What is your favourite way to exercise and why?
I am a big lover of weights and resistance training. I like to feel strong and over the years I have realised that this training works best for my body. For a number of years my immune system was weak as a result of my autoimmune condition. I would try do intense cardio and find my body would break-down. Although this training can be fantastic, I have slowly had to build my body up to be able to do this kind of exercise occasionally. I have also become a big lover of Pilates this year; it is great for core-strength, good posture, balance and aligning my body. Plus my Pilates instructor (Debby-Lee Maister at Bondi Pilates Centre) is a drill sergeant so she keeps the lessons fun and interesting!

After a struggle with illness, you were diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. How is your life different now and what do you credit to your recovery?
My life has changed a number of ways since being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. I have learnt which foods are best for my body to help me feel at my best. I am more aware of the signs my body gives me when I need to slow down or rest. Stress also impacts my body. Before I started GoodnessMe Box this was a big factor that I considered, ‘will the stress of running a business affect my condition?’. However, I have to say that it has been a different kind of stress, as I love what I do. I would categorise it more as adrenalin as you get so excited discovering new products, seeing the business move forward and dreaming up new ideas which we can action on the spot!

I would credit my recovery to finding the correct health practitioner, changing my diet and managing my lifestyle better whether it be exercise, stress or sleep.

If someone were looking to improve their diet, what simple changes would you recommend they begin with?
I am a big believer in speaking to a health practitioner if you are looking to change your diet. Every body is different and just as I discovered, some foods may not agree with my body but can do wonders for others.

There are certainly a few simple steps everyone can begin with to improve their diet including:
- Avoid artificial sweeteners. Try to find a natural sweetener that works for your body. There are plenty on the market including brown rice malt syrup, stevia, coconut palm sugar, xylitol, dextrose etc
- Read the ingredients – this is a big one for me! Anything with too many ingredients or that you may not understand, your body probably won’t agree with either. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity. The first ingredient makes up the largest amount of what the product is made of so always keep that in mind.
- Keep your plate colourful and eat plenty of vegetables
- Eat mindfully, slowly and listen to your belly! Often our eyes can be bigger than our stomachs.
- Try plan your meals in advance or keep an abundance of fresh produce in the fridge so you are always prepared and equipped when hungry

As the founder of GoodnessMe Box, what advice do you have for others wanting to start a business in the health and wellness industry?
My advice for others wanting to start a business in the health and wellness industry would be to go for it! It is a booming industry with so many people becoming increasingly health conscious. We have experienced the surge and excitement surrounding wellness and it is only going to grow. Just take one look at the expanding health food aisle in the big supermarkets as an indicator.

You have to make sure you are 100% passionate about health and wellness as it is a 24/7 job. Speak to as many people in the industry as you can and you will find it is a welcoming community to be a part of as everyone is focused on a similar cause.

Favourite healthy snack on the run?
I often keep a wholesome snack handy incase I get hungry on the run and I have a few favourites depending if I feel like sweet or savoury!

I like to carry Brookfarm’s new Brothers Blend of nuts and Fine Fettle Flats have these fabulous single serve crackers made from fruit and veg squished together with seeds or nuts (I like Almond and Zucchini!) or you can get a serve with a dip like hummus in convenient packaging! There are some great bars on the market like Loving Earth’s Luvju bars or Simply Raw do a yummy pea protein bar to keep your tummy rumbles at bay.

You couldn’t live without…
This may be an obvious answer but I couldn’t live without my friends, family or my boyfriend. After starting a business it is so important to have a solid support network and I’m so lucky to have these people in my life who understand what I am working towards and support me implicitly.

On the weekends you’ll find me…
On the weekends you’ll find me at a café Sunday morning, sipping on chai, reading the paper and digging into my poached eggs, avo and sautéed kale (love a place that bathes the good stuff in coconut oil!)

What’s next for GoodnessMe Box?
Currently I have a million and one ideas that I want to action to spread the message of health and wellness further through GoodnessMe Box. There is a lot in the pipeline so you will have to keep an eye on us to see what comes next!
