Splitting her time between Sydney and New York, she’s attended to many a famous face, including Cate Blanchett, Jessica Biel, Pink and Miranda Kerr, and is a backstage regular at fashion shows.
A master of the brush; her work has appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire and Rolling Stone. She’s also done campaigns for Mimco, Mambo and Allanah Hill (just to name a few). Rae shares with us some of her top make-up tips, which you can all try at home. No appointment needed.
What do you do?
I’m a make-up artist
How did you begin your career as a make-up artist?
I began my career 20 years ago. I was a hairdresser before that and it was actually by accident that I ended up doing make-up. While I was working as a hairstylist in Turkey, a situation arose where Naomi Campbell’s make-up artist stormed out of the room and I was left to gloss up her lips. Just as I was doing that, the paparazzi managed to get in the room. I was photographed doing her make-up and the rest is history!
What has been your most memorable job to date?
I was lucky enough to be on tour as Pink’s make-up artist – an experience I’ll never forget! Shooting my latest book for women over 40 has also been another stand out job for me.
Can you name some of the most inspiring people you’ve worked with?
Fashion consultant, author and television presenter, Gok Wan is one. He is the most beautiful human being I have ever met! He grounds me and treats everyone he meets like they are a superstar. He has come from a tough childhood and has become incredibly successful with absolutely no ego. I love him!
Cyndi Lauper is another; she inspired me to write my third book, Timeless.
Which products are always in your toolkit?
L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Mascara and L’Oreal Paris Lumi Foundation gives the best luminated skin you have ever seen! It gives you a Miranda Kerr glow!
Do you use any products that aren’t traditionally cosmetic?
My favourite face scrub is a mix of bicarb soda and Cetaphil. Bicarb is safe enough to eat so it’s safe enough to use on the skin. It’s the best exfoliant you will ever use, and, it’s the cheapest!
I also love nipple cream (yes, you read it right) – it’s pure lanolin and amazing for the driest lips, elbows, hands and feet.
What’s your number one beauty tip?
Always match your foundation to the colour of your chest – not your neck! (Your neck is the palest part of your body). Also, as your complexion changes from season to season, so should your foundation.
What’s the hottest beauty trend for summer 2012/13?
Matt shadows and lips. Matt eye shadows are a great anti-ageing tool so I’m so looking forward to this trend!
What’s the number one makeup error women make when applying their make-up?
They don’t apply or check it in natural light. The best place to check your make-up is in the rear-vision mirror of your car (not while driving obviously!).
You’re a very busy bee! What’s one timesaver you rely on?
When my car is a mess I call Nanotech – www.ecowash.com.au – it’s waterless and the best car clean I’ve ever had. PLUS, they come to you!
