What do you do?
I run beauty PR and Communications agency: Sarah Humphries Agency
PR and the media landscape has changed substantially in the past few years, how has Sarah Humphries Agency adapted as a business and what do you see happening in the next few years?
Everything changes. Yes, there have been huge changes in the last few years, but if you ask people working in the 70’s and 80’s they would say the same thing, can you imagine being in an office when computers first started coming in? Change happens and its always a good thing. I don’t feel like we’ve adapted, we’ve simply evolved, in PR it is your job to know who the influencers are, no matter the platform they use. It’s about always being ahead of the game.
What is your best business advice to young women wanting to go out on their own and start a business?
Do something because you love it, because you literally couldn’t imagine doing anything other than that. That driving force will make the hard times easier and the good times even better.
What do you love most about running your own agency? And least?
There is nothing I don’t love about running my own business. Even on the hardest day it is still satisfying and on the best day, well you can imagine – it’s better than ever. If I had to choose one thing I love the most though, it would be my team. They are the best and I would be lost without them.
What has been the biggest ‘pinch me’ moment in your career so far?
Where do I start? When I was at NYFW for the first time under the banner of SHA and I couldn’t help but think my 16 year-old-self would be really proud. When my team and I were named Beauty PR Team of the Year at the Star Awards, in our first year. Every time a brand contacts me and says the agency was recommended to them by a journalist. There are so many. I feel very blessed.
Your agency specialises in the beauty and lifestyle industry. What’s your daily beauty routine and must-have products?
OK, this is a long list, but given my job, it has to be…here I go:
I always double cleanse. At the moment I’m using Rosehip by Essano cleanser in the morning, I tone with Clarins and a use a variety of mositusers, depending on the time of year and how my skin is feeling. Then I have my go-to treatment products, again I mix them up depending on how my skin is feeling: I’m obsessed with Sanctuary Spa’s Therapists Secret Facial Oil, KORA organics Hydrating Mask, Rosehip by Essano’s Rosehip Oil and Clarins Double Serum (you always needs a great serum and I’ve not found one better).
I’ve been using Lanolips 101 Ointment on my lips and cuticles since before the brand even launched six years ago.
I’m a total loyalist to Lanolips Buttermilk Body Butter. It is HEAVEN.
For tanning, I love St. Tropez Dark. Most people go for the original, but for me, the darker the better.
I have been using Laura Mercier make-up for years, long before I started working on the brand, so my kit is pretty well stocked with her products. I would never not use the Laura Mercier Oil Free Primer, Secret Camoflague or Under Eye Concealer.
For lips, I have every shade of Lanolips on rotation, at all times.
Dove Shampoo and Conditioner. Hands down the best I’ve used and I’ve used a lot.
Hermes Kelly Caleche
Impulse Sweet Smile (seriously, so good!)
Describe your style in 3 words…
Classic, Comfortable & Simple.
Best place for brunch in Sydney?
Lox Stock and Barrel in Bondi For breakfast the Avocado Smash is out of this world, the coffee is incredible and don’t get me started on the raspberry and dark chocolate muffins.
When/where do you do your best thinking?
After my meditation.
When do you feel your healthiest?
Whenever I’ve exercised, especially after swim or when I’ve cooked a delicious meal knowing that every ingredient is a whole food without any additives ie. Sugar or salt.
Which 3 people (past or present) would you invite to dinner and why?
Eleanor Roosevelt – Her book ‘You Learn By Living’ is the greatest book I’ve ever read. She is so wise. To be honest, if she was at dinner, I wouldn’t talk – I’d just listen.
Tina Fey or Oprah….I can’t decide! Tina because of the hilarity and the intellect, Oprah because I think she’d love Eleanor R even more than me.
Hadley Hemmingway – Hadley was Ernest Hemmingway’s first wife. I think she lead such an interesting life, with so many challenges and yet so found her sense of self and strength and went on to live a life with out him.
