WY? contact contributor, Fenella ‘Fenji’ McCall, the face behind ‘My Dress Up Box’ and all round fashion fanatic, gives us the lowdown on three new Australian designers that we must keep an eye on (and a purchase!) this Winter….
Australian style and design has evolved so much! My wardrobe is filled with pieces by Australian designers and even when I travel, I find myself shopping for Aussie clothes before I go away, or simply waiting till I’m back home before I buy new pieces for the changing seasons. I’m always on the look out for un-known exciting labels and fresh new designers. I’ve recently fallen in love with Christopher Esber, Michael Lo Sordo and By Johnny- three labels that are going from strength to strength and gaining loyal followers with their impressive creations. Here is the lowdown on each of the designers and why they should be on your radar.
Sydney born Christopher Esber made his debut in 2008, alongside his colleague Dion Lee. At only 25, he is still very young, so it may come as a surprise that he has already been awarded the L’oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival’s ‘National Designer of the Year Award’, as well as the ‘BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award’ in March of this year. Esber creates unique fabrics and shapes that are exclusive to his brand and have resulted in a ‘signature’ look. His collections are inspired by his surroundings, while his attention to detail is second to none. He has said that ‘it is a personal goal of mine to do my best in everything,’ adding, ‘there is so much more to conquer’ (www.vogue.com.au). Some words that come to mind when I think of his label are experimental, modern, refined and inspiring. His website is currently under construction and coming soon, however you can view his latest collections at Vogue.com.au or shop the collections at Green with Envy and My Chameleon.
Born in Sydney in 1984, his signature designs are innovative and luxurious, while maintaing mainstream wearability. His label is getting lots of attention for it’s structured and sharp designs which are minimal and feminine. Coming from a strong background in textile design, he uniquely creates prints that are exclusive to his label. In 2012, Lo Sordo was named 2012 Qantas Soya 365 Fashion Winner, as well as being a finalist in the LMFF National Designer award, for both 2012 and 2013. He was invited to show his collections in both New York and Milan during 2012 and has established himself and his label with a loyal following of celebrities and well-known fashion bloggers. To take a look at his amazing designs and buy online you can head to JASU , Green with Envy or Alice Euphemia.
In 2009, Johnny Schembri launched his first fashion label By Johnny. In 2010, he won the Peroni Harper’s Bazaar ‘Young Designer Award,’ while in 2011 he was a finalist on Foxtels season 3 of Project Runway. To top off a hugely successful beginning, Johnny was then one of the top 10 finalists for the ‘Qantas Spirit of The Youth Awards’ (SOYA) and his 2013 showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney (his third Fashion Week show) received rave reviews. This was a huge turning point for his label and the fans have flocked from far and wide. To see his latest S/S13 collection head to the MBFWA site.
