You’re not burning as much as you think - Experts agree that when it comes to cardio (spinning included) the kilos do not always drop off. It’s not uncommon for people to gain weight at the beginning of a cardio exercise regime with increase muscle mass and overeating being the two contributing factors. When it comes to spin many feel like they can indulge in extra sweet treats post workout but this mentality will only see your buttons getting tighter and your bulges getting bigger… Despite burning between 400 and 600 calories it’s not realistic to increase food intake and expect to loose weight – portion controlled, nourishing meals are key…
You can hurt yourself - Some spin classes have introduced a hand weight component into the 45 minute routines but because studios are often dark, instructors can’t monitor your form. Without maintaining proper technique on the bike you are not only compromising your calorie burning ability but you also increase the chance of injury.
There is a strong focus on one muscle group - The over conditioning of your thighs during spin can negatively effect your other muscles and bulk your thighs. And if spin is your only form of exercise hip flexors and quads tend to overdevelop which leads to imbalance and eventual injury…
So there you have it. Those in favour of spin suggest it’s not all bad… the cardio component strengthens your heart, it’s a great stress reliever, a form of low impact exercise and the atmosphere is undeniably fun. Having said that, if shredding kilos is your ultimate goal, the key to mix it up. Shake up your exercise routine by incorporating a weight session, pilates, boxing class, qi gong or perhaps a simple stroll….When it comes to successful fitness and weightloss, rotation and variety is key!
